Can I finance a car for a year?

Hi I’m looking into buying my first car and was wondering about financing it with the idea that I could possibly move abroad in a years time. If I took out a loan or went with a finance plan is it possible to end the loan/finance and hand back the car if I do decide to go abroad in a years time aka not have any debts/financial commitments to worry about back here?

Our answer:

Hi Rebecca,

You could theoretically get a one-year bank loan, though you'd then have to sell on the car yourself at the end. I don't think that's what you're looking to do. Most car finance plans last much longer than a year and while they usually allow handing back the car, there will usually be extra fees to do that. On PCP finance, for example, you have to have paid off more than half the value of the car before it can be given back with no penalties. You wouldn't likely do that in one year - though there's no harm in going into a dealer and talking it through with them.

A potentially better option for you could be leasing. Though most companies lease for a minimum of two years, we discovered that Leaseplan has schemes on used cars from as little as one year. This could be worth looking into as a relatively hassle-free way to get behind the wheel for only a year.
