Can I bring a car in via Northern Ireland?

Hi, I see that imports from UK will now have customs duty, VAT and VRT applied by revenue, whereas imports from NI will only be charged VRT. If I buy a car up north from a dealer will I be charged customs and vat if the car has a Uk reg v’s NI reg? Where I’m coming from is if the dealer in NI Imported the car from Uk and I buy it will it only be subject to Vrt? Thanks

Our answer:

Hi Rob,

We do not believe that will be possible. Revenue says it will be looking for proof of original importation to Northern Ireland. We don't know what that means at this stage, in reality, but Revenue certainly intends to avoid the situation you have described.
