Can I afford a 2014 Focus?

Hello I have a 2014 142 Ford Fiesta. I need a bigger car but only have a budget of €4,000. What should i realisybe looking at. I thought a 2014 focus but am not sure I could afford it. I would appreciate your guidance.

Our answer:

Hi Mary,

It depends how much space you need and how old a car you’re prepared to buy. For instance, circa €4,000 pretty easily gets you into a 2008-2009 Skoda Octavia, which manages to be both reliable and massive inside, but you might not fancy buying a ten-year old car. You certainly won’t get anything bigger than your existing Fiesta for €4k that’s as new as a 142.

Of course, trade in your Fiesta and you should be able to get €9-10,000 for it, and that, added to your €4,000 original budget, really opens things up. A budget of around €13,000 to €14,000 puts you into all manner of roomier 141 and 142-plate cars. Dacia Duster? Citroen Berlingo? And, yes, we’ve found more than a few 2014 Focuses for that kind of cash.
