Best way to get an 18-year-old motoring.

My son has turned 18 I'm looking to see what is the cheapest way or best way to get him motoring please

Our answer:

Hi Chris,

First thing to do, if he hasn't already, is to get a driving licence, as that will mean he can drive alone and build up experience, plus it will reduce insurance premiums. Of course, getting an appointment to be tested is tricky in the current situation, so hopefully he already has that.

Next thing to consider is if he needs his own car at this stage, or if you're happy for him to learn the ropes using your car. It should be cheaper to add him as a named driver on your car (depending on what it is of course) than to go and get him another car and insure him on it. Saying all that, make sure you're not 'fronting' by putting a car in your name, but your son is then the main driver.

If you're talking about getting him his own car, go for the most modern one your budget allows, as that should include the best and latest safety measures. Other than that, keep your son's insurance bill low by choosing as small an engine size as possible. The insurers are still fixated on that, certainly for new drivers. Have a look around for policies designed specifically for new drivers, including things like curtailed driving hours and mileage, and maybe even having a driver monitoring system fitted.
