How many kids? If it's just the two (like myself) then I always think a compact estate is the best bet. The Skoda Octavia is the pick of that litter but the Ford Focus wagon and Kia cee'd SW are also well worth a look.
More than two? You're getting into seven-seater territory then. Toyota's Verso is excellent, as is the Citroen C4 Picasso.
