The year isn't hugely significant as really, for a first car, what you're buying on is price and engine size. You need to keep as close to 1.0-litre engine capacity to have any hope of getting a reasonable insurance quote, so the best cars to look at are Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen up!, Opel Corsa, or Hyundai i10. The Yaris is probably the best all rounder, but the up! is a great car if you can stretch to the price.
