It really depends on what your budget is to begin with, to be honest, and what you mean by "small". The premium brands historically do quite well, but may not have what you're looking for. You can't go too far wrong with Volkswagen, Toyota or Skoda, but again, it depends massively on which vehicle you're buying to start with.
