You've not told us anything about the engine (size, power, fuel), which is crucial to give you useful information. However, most Mondeos of that era (other than the petrol units of 2.0-litre capacity and larger) use a timing belt. The 1.5 TDCi diesel's belt, for example, must be changed at least every 250,000km or 10 years, whichever comes first.
