Anything to look for on 2011 BMW 520d?

I'm looking at an 11 BMW 520d auto with 111k miles. Is that a lot? When does the timing chain need doing? Or is there anything I need to look for?

Our answer:

Hi Michael,

I presume you mean that’s the old-shape, E60 5 Series: 2011 was the crossover year for that and the current F10 model. Either way, it’s best to be slightly wary of older versions of BMW’s 2.0-litre diesel as there are a few well-known problems. The timing chain is indeed an issue, and needs to be not just changed regularly but also constantly monitored for weakness. The fault is a well-known one, although BMW has never recalled the engines affected to be changed.

Keep an eye on the turbo too – if there’s a lot of white smoke from the exhaust on start-up, or when accelerating, walk away. Other than that, make sure the car comes with a water-tight service history.
