Am I better off going for an estate?

Am I better off going for an estate?

I want to change from a focus hatchback to a bigger car/suv typle vehcile for more room in the back.. I have 2 kids, any recommendations? I like the Kia sportage but am I gaining on space really? would a passet or mondeo be a better option of Octavia?

Our answer:

Hi Linda,

A Sportage would have considerably more space than a Focus, and a much bigger boot too, so yes you would be gaining some space, but you’ve hit on a very canny point there – you can get even better space at a similar budget (and with generally lower running costs) by buying an estate rather than an SUV. As a family man myself, also with two kids, as long as you don’t need a seven-seater, estates are always the right way to go for family motoring.

A Passat or Mondeo would both be excellent choices – comfy, vast space in the back seats and with massive boots, but the Octavia is an excellent choice too. Get an Octavia Combi and you have much better rear legroom than you’d get in a Focus, plus a 600-litre boot that rivals those of the bigger Passat or Mondeo, all for less money (usually) and with lower running costs.
