Our answer:

Hi Manohar,

The Mk2 Ford Focus TDCi is a generally sound car and that looks to be a reasonable price for that mileage, so if the maintenance history is complete then it should be a fine purchase. Common faults on the diesel Focus include a clogged exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, which can lead to rough running, uneven idling and (sometimes) white smoke while in motion. Any excessive white or grey smoke from the exhaust on cold start-up or during meaningful acceleration on a test drive could indicate a failing turbo, a common problem on all turbodiesels, but black smoke from time to time is more common for a TDCi of this age and shouldn’t represent a problem. Finally, Mk2 Focuses are prone to rust around the wheel arches, so check those for any tell-tale signs of ‘bubbling’ under the paint.
