Would love a MINI One. Thoughts?

Looking for a second car to leave at station, would love a mini one, however worried about older age, budget €8,000. Any known problems with older mini one?

Our answer:

Hi Fi,

The MINI is a reasonably robust car, and the fact that you’re looking at the One means that you probably won’t be buying one stuffed with optional electronic options that can cause trouble. That said, there are some areas to keep a close eye on. Clutches can burn out easily enough and they’re expensive to replace, so watch for a ‘biting point’ that’s too high up in the clutch pedal. If the steering is too heavy when parking then the power steering pump is on the way out, and a rumbling noise from the suspension is going to be the wheel bearings.

If the engine is running rough or mis-firing then the coil pack will probably need replacing, while a heavy vibration indicates flywheel problems. The catalytic convertor needs replacing at 120,000km and a knocking sound from underneath probably means that an exhaust bracket has come loose.
