Searching for a car under €5,000.

Searching for a car under 5000 euro. What cars should I be searching for with this budget? What millage should I buy the given car between? For example Toyota Corolla with millage no larger than 220,000miles. My price range is listed above. Preferably I would like to spend around 4000 euro but if the car is worth I will increase to 5000. What I seek in a car is mainly good reliability, good mpg and 5 doors. Preferred shape is saloon type but not against anything else. Main use is for traveling, to work and meeting friends.

Our answer:

Hi Jim,

Generally speaking, if you’re buying on a tight budget, the best thing to do is to buy Japanese or Korean. For whatever reasons, Toyotas, Hondas, Hyundais, Kias, Nissans, Mitsubishis and Mazdas are just always that bit more reliable than their European or American rivals, and when you’re on a budget that’s important. Don’t worry too much about mileage – instead buy on condition and history. A high mileage car with a full history that’s in great condition is a better bet than something with low miles and gaps in the service book.
