I'm about to buy my first car.

I'm about to buy my first car.

I'm about to buy my first car, what advice would you have when picking a used car and any red flags that I should look out for before I buy?

Our answer:

Hi Conor,

If it's your first car then there are two things you need to be most concerned about - insurance and reliability. As far as insurance is concerned, you need to keep the age under ten years (the car, not you...) and the engine size at around 1.0 litres. A Toyota Yaris or Aygo, Citroen C1, Peugeot 107, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen up!, SEAT Mii, Skoda Citigo or Opel Corsa are the best options here. All are available with 1.0-litre engines and the Yaris, Micra and Volkswagen will be the most reliable.
