Hi Kim,
The technical way is to check the Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN. Japanese VINs rather handily start with a J. However, it might be easier just to open the driver or passenger door and check the tyre pressure plaque. If the car was originally sold in Japan, the writing on it will be in Japanese.
