The  BMW is the fun one – rear-drive, pokey motor and Bavarian attitude. Not the most practical thing in the world though and servicing can be pricey if you’re expecting hatchback running costs. The Focus is ultra-seenisble, not without a dash of style and very smooth and pleasant to drive, but space in the back isn’t great and the cabin looks and feels a bit dowdy. The Golf treads the middle ground – Germanically stylish, enjoyable to drive without being massively fun and there’s plenty of space in the cabin and boot. Overall, it’s still the best one.
