Hi I am just looking for in formation on cars...we have a 5 year old 2 year old and new baby due very soon...just wondering what cars do you think would fit three seat in the back and good size boot. Really don't want to get a seven seater ...and have 2012 Passat at moment and prob only go up ton2015. Any info would be grateful. Thanks.

Our answer:

Hi Aoife,

Regrettably, we cannot provide you with an answer – as the only vehicles that will fit your bill, running up to 2015, will all be seven-seaters, we’re afraid. Vehicles like the Volkswagen Touran, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso and Audi Q7 (Mk2) can all get three child seats across the middle row, but they’re all offered with seven seats as standard. The current short-wheelbase Peugeot Rifter, Citroen Berlingo and Opel Combo Life models (being, as they are, all the same vehicle, only sold under different brands) come as five-seat variants that can fit three car seats across the middle, but they were all launched in 2018, so they’re not old enough to fall into your criteria. You might get lucky and try older versions of the Citroen Berlingo Multispace or the C4 Picasso (not the Grand C4 Picasso), which may possibly be able to accommodate three child seats across their rear rows.

Saying all that, many people manage to squeeze three seats into the rear of regular cars, but it's not usually recommended and massively depends on how bulky the child seats are, as that can vary hugely. Best bet is to try the seats out in a variety of cars at a large second-hand car supermarket.
