Smartphone screen maker working on car windshield

According to latest reports the technology that protects your iPhone may soon make it into your car.

Take a look at the smartphone or tablet that you are viewing this web page on (nobody uses laptops for web browsing anymore do they?). In all likelihood that phone or tablet features a Gorilla Glass screen from New York based company Corning. Since its introduction on the original iPhone, this scratch resistant and (somewhat) impervious screen has become ubiquitous, being used on approximately 1.5 billion smartphone and tablet screens worldwide.

And according to latest reports the technology that protects your iPhone may soon make it into your car. Corning is currently in discussion with a number of car manufacturers who want to take advantage of Gorilla Glass' low weight and sound proofing qualities to deliver quieter cabins and better fuel economy.

Speaking at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Mobile Summit Corning senior vice president Jeffrey Evenson said he expects at least one high-end auto maker to begin building cars that use some Gorilla Glass within the next year.

This move would actually bring Gorilla Glass full circle as the innovative product was originally derived from experimentation into windshield technology in the 1960s.

So it seems Apple is not the only company working to bring smartphone technology into your car.
