Government extends expiry dates for NCT and driving licenses

The Government has announced new measures in relation to vehicle testing for the NCT (National Car Test) and CVRT (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness test). Under the new measures, cars that were due an NCT on or after March 28^th 2020 will have the test date extended by four months, while commercial vehicles with a test due from March 28^th 2020 will have the test date extended by three months.

NCT test certificates are being extended due to the suspension of car testing on March 28^th in relation to COVID-19 restrictions. As car owners have been unable to undertake NCT tests due to the suspension of testing, it has now extended the test date by four months. NCTS has confirmed that it will not be issuing new certificates, and that An Garda Siochana will be aware that all NCT certificates with an expiry date on or after March 28^th 2020 are valid for four months after the expiry date printed on the windscreen disc. Minister Shane Ross also announced additional measures in relation to driver licensing. Driving licenses, learner permits and driver test theory certificates due to expire between March 1^st 2020 and June 30^th 2020 have had the expiry extended by four months. Similarly, certificates of competency which are issued when people pass their driving test and applying for their first full driver's license and are due to expire between March 1st and June 30th 2020 have also been extended by a period of four months. Initial basic training (IBT) certificates for motorcycle learners due to expire on the same dates have also been extended for a period of four months.
