Should I go for a Land Rover Discovery?

Hi, currently my wife runs a 2011 Astra diesel and I have a Land Cruiser commercial and a Sharan for the kids. I am thinking of getting a Land Rover Discovery td5 seven-seater to replace the Sharan and the Land Cruiser. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for your time

Our answer:

Hi Robbie,

Generally speaking, I love the Discovery – it’s one of the most versatile, comfortable cars you can buy and its on-road manners will likely stun you if you’re used to the roly-poly Land Cruiser. However, the Land Cruiser would definitely be the more reliable car overall. Now, the good news is that the Discovery 3 (and latterly the Discovery 4) doesn’t suffer the gearbox and suspension maladies of the original model, but there are some problem areas. Electric gremlins are common – but they tend to be of the relatively minor variety: glitches with the stereo etc. Suspension problems have been reported, including total failure of the compressor for the air suspension, but that seems to be quite rare and limited to early models around the 2004 mark. The basic rule of thumb is that Land Rover has been improving its quality and reliability all the time in recent years, so the more recent a Discovery you go for, the fewer problems you will have. Probably not a bad idea to buy from a Land Rover main dealer though, and get a good warranty. And then get an aftermarket warranty when that runs out.
