The one we always fall back on, and which is a bit of a well-kept secret by thost that tow often, is the SsangYong Rexton. It’s a proper 4x4 with a ladder-frame chassis and a powerful 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, so it will haul 3.5 tonnes with ease. They’re a little hard to find second-hand here in Ireland, as SsangYong is not a big-selling brand, but you should be able to import one from the UK with little difficulty, where they’re a lot more commonplace.
