Nissan announces sponsorship of Reservoir Dog Cycle Sportive

The Reservoir Dog Sportive takes place on September 5th

Nissan has returned to cycling sponsorship in Ireland as a partner to the award-winning Reservoir Dog Cycle Sportive which takes place on Sunday September 5th. The cycling sportive is one of the few mass participation events taking place in Ireland this year with a limited entry of 480 riders set to take on the 125km ‘Dog’ and 65km ‘Pup’ courses around Blessington and Wicklow on Sunday, 5th September, starting and finishing in the grounds of Russborough House

The event, which was named as “Best Leisure Event 2019” at the annual Cycling Ireland Awards, is organised and hosted by the Blessington based Reservoir Cogs Cycling Club and is firmly established as a ‘must do’ event on the Irish cycling calendar

It is the first Irish cycling event to commit to the concept of sustainability, introducing measures in 2018 to promote sustainable EV driving, to migrate to compostable cups, to eliminate the use of over 1,000 plastic bottles and to adopt and clean-up a section of the Wicklow uplands.

Nissan is renowned for having being the title sponsor of the Nissan International Classic during the Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche era. Nissan’s return to Irish cycling is a welcome boost for the sport which has enjoyed a massive resurgence during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nissan first became involved with the Reservoir Dog Sportive in 2019 but has now decided to step up its support for the event which is well-known for donating all of the proceeds that it raises to local environmental projects in Blessington and surrounding areas.

This year’s beneficiaries include Blessington Tidy Towns, St. Brigid’s Hospice in the Curragh and the community of Lacken who are working to restore a heritage building which is a regular food and water stop on the sportive route.

Nissan’s sponsorship includes the provision of two 100% electric Nissan LEAF cars and one ENV200 van to help run the event. The co-branded Nissan LEAF vehicles will be used as lead safety cars while the ENV200 will be put to use for pre-event course building and post-event signage retrieval.

All three vehicles are ideally suited to the challenging terrain with the 62kWh Nissan LEAF providing a range of up to 385 kilometres on a single charge. The 125km ‘Dog’ route takes in some of the most challenging climbs and scenic roads in Ireland, while the 65km ‘Pup’ event takes in a hilly and spectacular circuit of Blessington Reservoir.

Nissan is also helping to enhance the professional look and feel of the event by providing it with a new branded start/finish airbridge and a podium where those who complete the event can celebrate their achievement. It will also have a brand presence at feeding stations on the route.

“The Reservoir Dog Sportive is firmly established as a sustainable event and we are delighted to support its vision and to help it raise funds for local community organisations who are also committed to sustainability and to enhancing their local environment,” said Seamus Morgan, CEO of Nissan Ireland.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Declan Roe, Chairman of the Reservoir Cogs Cycling Club said: “We are delighted that Nissan is stepping up its support for the Reservoir Dog Sportive. We share the same values and we are jointly committed to promoting sustainable living and  sustainable transport and to supporting local organisations who are working to protect our environment”.
