Ariel has revealed plans for a limited-edition Atom Mugen, to be unveiled at the Autosport show at the NEC in January.

The car, which is being created to celebrate a decade of the epically minimalist Atom, is intended as the ultimate track-focused Atom.

Ariel intends to make a limited run of 10 Atom Mugens in collaboration with Mugen Euro, the European arm of the famous Japanese Honda tuner.

The car will use the K20Z engine from the Honda Civic Type R, but tweaked to produce a normally aspirated 270bhp - which is quite a lot when you consider that Ariel's own supercharged version officially puts out only 30bhp more.

Ariel is keeping somewhat mum about the rest of the Atom Mugen's spec, but each car will feature a distinctive livery, and will be fitted with a plaque signed by the Mugen and Ariel technicians responsible for the build of the car.

"We found that both ourselves and Mugen had the same meticulous attention to detail in the build of our cars and their engines." says Simon Saunders, director of Ariel. "One Ariel technician makes a car, one Mugen technician builds an engine. The result is a truly hand made car with a hand made engine."

Ariel says that it will reveal detailed technical specifications for the car when it is launched in January.
