Updated Citroen DS 5 on the way

The Citroen DS 5 has been updated, though all the changes are under the bonnet.

What's new?
The most radically-styled of Citroen's premium sub-brand, the DS 5 has come in for some mid-life changes all of which are taking place under its skin. Showing how much engine technology continues to evolve, Citroen has introduced a new engine with increased power output of 20hp while at the same time reducing emissions to 118g/km - a reduction of 40g/km in comparison to the outgoing Euro 5 HDi 160 engine.

The BlueHDi engine takes its name from an Adblue system, which, according to Citroen, turns up to 90 per cent of nitrogen oxides into harmless water vapour and nitrogen through a chemical process. Citroen claims that the average user can get up to 20,000km before the system requires refilling. The decrease in CO2 emissions is good news to the consumer as it sees a VRT reduction of 10 per cent, which brings the car into motor tax band A4, which is an annual rate of €200.

Helping the DS 5 achieve these reduced emissions and better fuel economy is a new six-speed automatic gearbox that, thanks to revised gear ratios, lowers the engine's operating speeds for a given performance. Pricing for the new DS 5 BlueHDi 180 will start at €39,795 for the DStyle specification, and go up to €42,685 for the range-topping DSport.

And finally...
Citroen has also updated the DS 5 with a new suspension set-up, which it claims to give a higher level of comfort, one feature the car had been criticised for in the past. New shock absorbers have been designed to reduce vibration and, thanks to new progressive damping technology, should give a smoother ride over more uneven surfaces - something we will be putting to the test in the near future.
