Stunning new Audi estate

Audi has revealed the 450hp RS 4 Avant.

As with the original Audi RS4, the latest (now with a space in its name for some reason) will be available in Avant guise only, Audi stating that its hot estates always outsell the four-door models. Regardless, we're excited. It debuts at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the TT RS plus and goes on sale before the end of 2012.

When the rumours first circulated about the launch of a new RS 4 Avant we assumed that it would use a boosted engine of some description, but, pleasingly, it is powered by the tuneful 4.2-litre V8 from the RS 5 Coupé. That means 450hp at 8,250rpm and 430Nm available between 4,000- and 6,000rpm. The RS 4 Avant weighs more than the RS 5 so its acceleration is 'blunted' a fraction. Not that there's much wrong with the 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds. As ever top speed is limited to 250km/h, though if you ask nicely (and presumably pay for the privilege) Audi will loosen the limiter to 280km/h.

The standard seven-speed, dual-clutch S tronic transmission's calibration is adjusted using the standard Audi drive select system and it features launch control. There will be no manual gearbox option. Like all Audi RS models the RS 4 Avant sends its power to the four wheels, via a quattro system that incorporates a crown-gear centre differential that can divert as much as 85 per cent of the engine's output to the rear wheels. The default split is 40/60 front to rear. Buyers can optionally add a sport differential to manage the torque across the rear axle. Carbon ceramic brakes are also on the options list.

Visually, the RS 4 Avant follows the same aggressive path as the RS 5, with square blisters for the wheelarches, sharp side sills and low bumpers. The front is the most changed thanks to the silver-accented splitter, huge air intakes and a hexagonal mesh to the main grille. There are several alloy wheels to choose from with 19-inch items as standard and 20-inch rims on the options list.

Though Irish specifications have yet to be disclosed, the RS 4 Avant should be well equipped. In Germany it comes with heated, electrically adjustable sports seats finished in black leather and Alcantara, along with various RS-specific updates, including a lap timer and oil thermometer in the MMI interface.
