SEAT previews new Toledo

Don't be fooled by the 'concept' tag, as this "close to production study" is the new SEAT Toledo. Set to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Salon next week, it comes hot on the heels of the firm's Mii city car and rejuvenated Ibiza supermini.

Don't be fooled by the 'concept' tag, as this "close to production study" is the new SEAT Toledo. Set to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Salon next week, it comes hot on the heels of the firm's Mii city car and rejuvenated Ibiza supermini.

It's quite a departure for the brand, the previous Toledo looking more like an MPV with a grafted on boot, as this model combines traditional saloon car looks with coupé-like proportions. The three-box silhouette is misleading though, as the latest car in SEAT's product offensive is actually a five-door hatchback.

Lift the lid and you'll find a load space of over 500 litres, while folding rear seats will give it estate car like practicality should you be in need. The 4.48-metre long body and 2.6-metre wheelbase ensure there's plenty of room for all five occupants too.

It's not a radical departure on the outside though, with a design similar to the Skoda MissionL (whose platform it shares) and Volkswagen's recent Jetta. Still, a wide and prominent grille, flanked by sharp headlights, lend it some character, while the large rear doors aid access to the rear. Inside, the cabin features all the hi-tech equipment available from the Volkswagen Group, though the show car's leather and intricate stitching isn't likely to be carried over to anything but the most expensive production models.

Expect to see the new model hit Irish showrooms at the end of the year.
