Opel has announced it will debut an all-new turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

What's the news?
Opel has announced it will debut an all-new turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, with 1.0-litre Adams expected to hit the market in 2014. The new engine is the first in a line of Opel engines imaginatively titled Small Gasoline Engine (SGE) that will spawn three- and four-cylinder units with capacities ranging from 1.0- to 1.6 litres.

The 1.0 SIDI Turbo (to give it its official title) is said to offer 115hp and 166Nm of torque - more power than most comparable three-cylinder units and more torque than the 1.6-litre engine currently fitted to the Astra. The new unit is also said to be 30 per cent lighter and, thanks to a new six-speed transmission, 20 per cent more efficient.
