Irish Opels to get wifi

Opel has announced that, from August, Irish customers will be able to order a new wifi module for their OnStar infotainment systems. OnStar is Opel's linked-up in-car system that combines satnav, infotainment and an on-call concierge service, to which can now be added an internet connection.

Unlike some cars, which simply use a wifi ariel to re-broadcast your mobile phone's 4G signal in the car, this one is a proper in-car wifi set-up, with its own dedicated SIM card, which, combined with a special antenna, can "maximise connectivity and deliver a stable internet connection."

As before, the OnStar system continues to offer such services as Automatic Crash Response, Emergency SOC Response, Roadside Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Vehicle Diagnostics or Destination Download (which allows you to get the call centre people to program your satnav by remote).

Opel hasn't announced option or subscription prices for the wifi system yet, but we'll let you know as soon as they do.
