Fastest Peugeot ever debuts

The stylish Peugeot RCZ is about to get a sizeable power boost.

What's the news?
Peugeot has officially given the green light to the RCZ R, a 270hp version of the sports coupé that was shown in concept form at last year's Paris Motor Show. It will make its international debut at this week's Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Exterior
The RCZ R will look unlike any other member of the RCZ family with matt black roof arches, suspension lowered by 10mm and 19-inch alloy wheels that really fill the arches. The rims themselves are unique to the R and feature a two-tone diamond / black matt finish with the 'R' monogram milled into the wheel. The wheels sit over new larger brakes (necessary to rein in the extra power) that feature Peugeot Sport callipers finished in red.

At the back an integrated spoiler has been fitted to increase downforce over the rear of the car without adversely affecting drag while a new diffuser houses a pair of chrome exhaust tips.

A Peugeot monogrammed 'R' in red lettering is identified on the grille and also placed on the boot lid as a signature 'RCZ R'.

Interior
Peer past the 'Peugeot Sport' embossed sills and it is obvious that drivers of the RCZ R will be accommodated in luxury with leather used extensively, all finished in contrasting red stitching. The seats are of a new design and will be finished in Nappa leather and black Alcantara and branded with the monogram 'R'. A special certification plate, finished in brushed aluminium, sits on the centre console that is finished with a red inscribed 'R'.

Red detailing is also carried over to a new smaller steering wheel and short shift gear stick with a specific aluminium knob.

Mechanicals
Power for the RCZ R will come from a thoroughly reworked version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol unit that is used elsewhere in the Peugeot range. For the range topper peak power has been upped to 270hp and 330Nm of torque, which, considering a kerb weight of 1,280kg, equates to a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. With a specific power output of nearly 170hp per litre the engine is amongst the best in the world for a production vehicle and the highest power car that Peugeot has ever produced for the road.

Despite the power, Peugeot is quoting fuel economy of 44.8mpg and emissions of 145g/km. A sound symposer (similar to the one used by Ford on the ST range) has been fitted to make sure the R sounds as good as it goes.

Anything else?
The Peugeot RCZ R is expected to go on sale next year at a significant premium to the current 200hp range-topping version.
