See all Motoring NewsWhile €15,000 isn’t an insignificant sum of money, it’s still relatively affordable for most of us these days, even in the tough times of 2020. So here are the nine cheapest new cars available right now, as part of the 202-registration period.
New Citroen Cars Under €15k
Part of a triumvirate of city cars with Peugeot (108) and Toyota (Aygo), the Citroen C1 looks funky and €14,545 bags a Feel VTi with the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine developing 72hp. Emitting 90g/km of CO2, this car’s cheap to run, tax and insure, and the purchase price means you can add either metallic paint or 15-inch alloy wheels and still come in under budget.
New Dacia Cars Under €15k
Aside from the Duster and Logan MCV Stepway, both of which kick off at €17,000-plus, all of Dacia’s new models begin at less than €15,000. The best value is, of course, the Sandero, the cheapest new car of all (unusual Renault Twizy, below, excepted), which kicks off at €11,640 for an Alternative SCe 75hp. That’s just €99 per calendar month (pcm) on finance, although – for €13,340 – you can upgrade your Sandero to a Signature model, complete with satnav, cruise control, air conditioning, a tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and rear parking sensors.
New Fiat Cars Under €15k
A couple of options here but your eye is going to be caught by the stylish 500 city car, which begins at €13,895 for a 1.2-litre, 69hp Pop model. There’s not much kit on the Fiat for this cash, but it does have bags of street cred and it’s fairly clean, too, with 115g/km of CO2 emissions.
New Hyundai Cars Under €15k
The previous i10 Mk2 was one of the best city cars in class and Hyundai has only improved the formula for this brand-new Mk3. An i10 Classic 1.0 costs from €14,745 (or €147.45 pcm) and it looks good on the outside, while packing a few luxuries like cruise control with a speed limiter, automatic lights, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a trip computer and a multifunction steering wheel.
New Kia Cars Under €15k
Kia’s Picanto is related to the Hyundai i10, although it has been on sale for some time now, whereas the i10 is newer. Nevertheless, a €13,795 Picanto 1.0 MPI K1 is sorely tempting, as it uses the same engine as the i10 and has items like a three-spoke leather steering wheel, Bluetooth and a TPMS as standard.
New Peugeot Cars Under €15k
As with the closely related Citroen C1, the 108 1.0 VTi Active has 72hp and a fairly decent standard specification, including air conditioning, a seven-inch touchscreen radio, LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and electrically operated, heated door mirrors. Again, there’s enough in the budget here to allow for any of the metallic colour options or an upgrade to a set of 15-inch alloy wheels, because the Active costs from just €14,480.
New Renault Cars Under €15k
Fancy an electric vehicle (EV) but think they’re too expensive? Think again. This wacky contrivance is the Renault Twizy, which is technically a quadricycle but as it has four wheels, two seats and a roof (of sorts), we’re including it here. For €9,995, you get an urban EV run-around in Dynamique trim, meaning 13-inch alloys, a heated windscreen and a ‘Clear Sky’ roof. There are battery leasing prices on top of this (usually €100 pcm or thereabouts) and you’re limited to a 100km range at a maximum speed of 80km/h, but if you’re a city dweller and you think an open-sided vehicle is advisable in our climate, there’s precious little on this list as distinctive as the Twizy.
New Suzuki Cars Under €15k
Suzuki’s charming Ignis micro-SUV squeaks into our budget, a 1.2 Hybrid SZ3 commanding a €14,970 list price. Delivery charges will likely push it beyond €15,000, but you get air conditioning, automatic headlights, LED DRLs, electric mirrors, DAB and Bluetooth, as well as the Suzuki’s ‘Whizzkid’-inspired retro styling.
New Toyota Cars Under €15k
The final third of the Citroen C1/Peugeot 108 puzzle, the Toyota’s main draw is that it comes with 15-inch alloy wheels as standard for its €14,580 starting price. That figure is for a 1.0 VVT-i 72hp three-cylinder petrol model in ‘x-cite’ specification, but it’s also for a three-door variant – for a five-door Aygo, you’re looking at €14,950.
