Powered by the same plug-in drivetrain the i8 Spyder mixes a TwinPower turbo combustion engine with a 96kW electric motor. Combined these allow the 1,630kg Spyder to reach 100km/h in just five seconds and onto an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h.
The total output of the powertrain is 354hp and 550Nm, though it's the i8 Spyder's ability to eke out 94mpg (3.0 litres/100km) on the official combined economy cycle that defines it. On electric power alone the i8 Spyder can cover about 30 kilometres, perfect for those promenade cruises on America's west coast. Do that and you'll not turn any heads thanks to the silent running, but BMW's stylists have made sure the i8 Spyder attracts attention for other reasons.
Taking the already sharp looks of the coupé, BMW has shortened the wheelbase and chopped off the roof, creating an achingly pretty sports car. Adding to the drama are butterfly opening doors, a see-through engine cover and bold blue and black detailing that dissects the curvaceous bodywork.
Inside, the edgy and contemporary style continues, with heavy emphasis on the driver. The instrumentation highlights the driving style, with Eco Pro mode seeing the display turn blue and Sport mode changing the illumination to orange.
The concept comes without a roof, but BMW states it plans a two panel lift-out section, further suggesting that the i8 Spyder is more than a mere concept. With the coupé anticipated to reach customers in 2013 the production-ready Spyder is expected to arrive in BMW showrooms in 2015. It makes its world debut at this month's Beijing Motor Show.
