Alfa sells Giulietta for a pittance

Promotional event sees one lucky owner walk away with a brand new car for next to nothing

We all love those old tales about someone getting a gobsmacking bargain in the car buying world, although probably half of them are nothing more than urban myths – but for one lucky punter, such a dream has become a reality.

Alfa Romeo UK (soon to be Alfa Romeo Scotland, post-September… but we digress) has given away one of its brand new Giuliettas for a 1954 price tag of £1,250, (just over €1,500) to a Mrs Mitchell of Falkirk.

In actual fact, what really happened was Mrs Mitchell of Falkirk ordered her Giulietta 1.4 TB MultiAir 170hp Exclusive (there’s a mouthful!) from Western Alfa Romeo Edinburgh during a promotional event the manufacturer was running to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the model.

Everyone who bought an Alfa between April 7 and April 22 was entered into a prize draw, with the winner refunded the difference between the 2014 purchase price of their car and £1,250, the princely sum a Giulietta Sprint would have set you back in the mists of ‘54.

Craig McKenzie, the sales manager for Western Alfa Romeo, said: “Alfa Romeo is an iconic and hugely passionate brand. We are very pleased to be able to present Mrs Mitchell (of Falkirk) with her new Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB MultiAir 170hp Exclusive at such an amazing price in celebration of the anniversary. We are sure she will have many happy miles of motoring ahead of her.”

So perhaps it is a little cruel of us to make the observation that if Mrs Mitchell of Falkirk had merely waited 18 months, give or take, the dead hand of depreciation would have probably brought the new Giulietta down to £1,250 anyway…
