Secondhand Civic or Superb?

Secondhand Civic or Superb?

2015/2016 Honda Civic 1.6 i-dtec Sport, 120bhp (33k km) or a 2016 Skoda Superb 1.6 tdi Ambition 120bhp (33k km). Changing my 2011 Vauxhall Insignia Ecoflex 2.0CDTi 160bhp (126k miles) for one or these. Doing about 500-600 miles per week of a commute and my head says practically the Skoda Superb, but my heart says that the Honda Civic is different and perhaps more fun to drive. Would appreciate some words of independent wisdom on this? Thanks

Our answer:

Hi Vincent,

That’s a tough one, as not only are these two fantastic cars, they’re both cars we love. Obviously, the Superb is closer to what you’re used to, and it has masses of space in the cabin and boot, so if you’re looking for something more practical than your outgoing Insignia, then it’s the one to go for. But, it’s not that engaging to drive. Not bad to drive, but not exciting. The Civic is, as you point out, very different indeed, and in spite of having oddly-weighted steering, it’s really enjoyable to drive. That 1.6-litre iDTEC diesel is also a bit of a star engine, and while the Skoda is very well made, it’s the Honda that will almost certainly be the more reliable car in the long term. Plus, the Civic is roomy enough in the back seats and has a big boot. As I say, it’s a tough decision but I’d probably go for the Civic in the end. Don’t forget, there’s an all-new Civic arriving early next year, so it might be worth shopping around some of the Honda dealers and see if you can get a really sharp deal on a run-out of the current model.
