Study shows 81% of Irish commuters prefer to drive than take public transport

Our latest study shows that Irish commuters still rely on their car rather than public transport, walking, or cycling.

Findings from our latest Carzone Motoring Report revealed that Ireland remains a nation deeply rooted in car culture, with 81% of Irish people opting for cars as their primary mode of commuting over public transport, walking, or cycling.

However, the report also highlights a growing openness to alternative transportation methods. Among the 81% who primarily use cars for commuting, a notable 72% express willingness to switch to more environmentally friendly options if available.

Notably, younger respondents, particularly those aged between 17 and 24, exhibit the highest propensity for change, with 76% open to switching. Conversely, individuals over 65 show the least inclination towards environmentally friendly commuting, with only 53% willing to make the transition.

Regional variances also emerge from the research. Residents of Leinster exhibit the highest receptiveness to sustainable commuting, with 73% expressing willingness to switch. Munster and Connacht closely follow with 72% and 71%, respectively, while Ulster demonstrates the lowest inclination to alter commuting habits, at 64%.

These insights stem from research conducted by Carzone, Ireland’s leading motoring marketplace, which amalgamates data from 80 million searches on Carzone in 2023 with a comprehensive survey of 1,000 motorists nationwide.

Sinead McCann, representing Carzone, comments on the report's implications for commuting habits, noting the evolving nature of transportation choices in Ireland. She states, “While our research underscores Ireland's heavy reliance on cars, it also reflects a growing openness to explore alternative transport options. As evidenced by our motoring report, the trend of downsizing vehicles to reduce costs hints at an ongoing evolution in people's transportation preferences.”
