Opel shows baby hot hatch

One of Opel's debutantes for the Paris Motor Show will be this sporty new Adam S.

What's new?
Opel has announced that the production version of the Adam S will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show next month. You may remember the S concept from when it was shown in Geneva packing a 150hp 1.4-litre turbo engine. Well Opel has tuned the chassis, fitted a set of OPC brakes and is set to let the hot supermini into the wild.

Outside
The range topping Adam features a lip spoiler up front, deeper sills, a distinctive rear spoiler and an extended rear bumper with a cut out for the oversized exhaust. You are unlikely to mistake the S for a Glam or Slam. Special Adam S logos have also been fitted to the C-pillars just in case there is any doubt.

A total of 10 body colours are available and these can be mixed and matched with four further roof combinations to create your ultimate Adam S. The new Red 'n' Roll roof design (as pictured) is reserved exclusively for the sportier models.

Inside
Buyers can choose from one of four different types of seats for the front of the car, three of them being exclusive to the S, including the Recaro Performance seats in Morrocana or nappa leather. Opt for the Red 'n' Roll roof design and you can pair it with a black and red leather package for the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake while lighting for the instrument panel and door is available in either white or red.

The Adam's IntelliLink system now features Apple's SIRI Eyes Free voice control so everything can be controlled remotely, from audio streaming via Stitcher or TuneIn apps to navigation by way of the BringGo app.

Android and Windows Phone customers will just have to do things the old fashioned way - via the seven-inch touchscreen.

Under the bonnet
At the heart of the Adam S is a 150hp/220Nm turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine that is closely related to the standard naturally aspirated unit. It has gone on a diet however and considerably upgraded. The result is 50 per cent more power and 70 per cent more torque than the regular engine yet emissions of 149g/km, not bad for a car that can do 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds and has a top speed the naughty side of 200km/h.

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission while Opel's OPC division has provided the brakes, which reside behind 17-inch or optional 18-inch alloy wheels. The chassis has also been tuned to deliver "direct, sharp performance steering" but the release does not detail the work done.

Anything else?
Order books for the range topping Opel Adam are expected to open in January with details on price and specification likely to come after it takes its bow in Paris.
