What's the news?
Peugeot has introduced a new range of three-cylinder petrol engines called PureTech. The range includes two naturally aspirated units - a 1.0-litre and a 1.2-litre - and a turbocharged direct injection 1.2-litre engine. The former two make 68- and 82hp respectively while the 1.2-litre turbo petrol unit will be available in two states of tune, 110- and 130hp.

Peugeot says 95 per cent of maximum torque in the PureTech range of engines is available between 1,500- and 3,500rpm, which makes them easy to drive, and efficient too.

On the other hand, the turbocharged 1.2-litre unit is said to boast similar performance to a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine. Emissions and fuel consumption both are lower than corresponding naturally aspirated units, and the engine is already compliant with Euro 6 legislation.

Anything else?
Peugeot will start shipping its range of vehicles with the PureTech engines starting this month. The models getting these engines include 108, 208, 2008, and 308. All three engines will be available with a manual gearbox only, except the 130hp 1.2-litre unit, which gets an automatic variant too.

Peugeot started working on the engines in 2010 with more than 250 engineers involved. Peugeot has filed 121 applications for patents for these engines.
