New Merc CLS arrives

Mercedes-Benz has refreshed the CLS range - and it's now even better value.

What's new?
Mercedes-Benz has updated the CLS 'four-door coupé' and its Shooting Brake sibling, and both cars are now available in Ireland. They feature new engines, a subtle facelift and - perhaps the best news of all - price reductions on the outgoing models.

Two diesel and two petrol engines will power the CLS models, with the most popular the entry level CLS 220 BlueTec diesel, with 170hp and 400Nm of torque. In 'coupé' format, it officially uses 4.7 litres/100km, emits just 122g/km CO2 and is therefore in Band B1 road tax, meaning it'll cost €270 per annum. Even better, the CLS 220 costs €62,505 (ex works), which is 10.5 per cent cheaper than the previous entry-level CLS's figure of €69,838. The Shooting Brake also starts cheaper, at €65,000.

Other drivetrains include the CLS 350 BlueTec V6 diesel (258hp/620Nm) and the petrol alternatives, the 3.5-litre bi-turbo V6 CLS 400 with 333hp and 480Nm, and the range-topping CLS 500 with 408hp and 600Nm. Above those are AMG versions of both the CLS and the Shooting Brake.

The new CLS models have a revised bumper, larger air intakes and a studded radiator grille at the front, while inside is a new, free-standing head unit, restyled centre console and new three-spoke sports steering wheel. The CLS also comes with optional Multibeam LED lights that can adjust quickly and automatically to illuminate the road best, without dazzling other road users.

Official word?
"With a notable CLS-Class customer base already in place, an entry level price significantly lower than before and an economy now moving in a positive direction, we expect the competitive appeal of our design-specifications-price equation to lead to an increase in demand for the CLS in the year and years ahead," said Mercedes' passenger car sales manager in Ireland, Ciaran Allen.
