C-Class Merc estate goes on sale

The stylish new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate has gone on sale, starting at €39,450.

What's new?
Mercedes-Benz has announced prices and specifications for the C-Class Estate in Ireland. The lead-in to the C-Class Estate range is the C 180 petrol model, which uses a 156hp 1.6-litre engine and comes with a price tag of €39,450. Of likely greater interest though is the cheapest diesel C-Class Estate, the C 180 CDI, which uses a 116hp 1.6-litre unit, and starts at a price of €39,860. If you want some green brownie points, you could go for the C 300 Hybrid, which retails for €51,120, or you could wait until next March when the new V8 turbo AMG version will arrive at a price of €98,225.

The estate version of the C-Class is pretty much the same as the saloon, but it does offer an 80mm longer wheelbase than the old C-Class, and can haul 450 litres of luggage with the rear seats in place. Fold them flat and you can get 1,510 litres in. Figures like that show that the C is still very much at the sports estate end of things and isn't competing with the more spacious Ford Mondeo or Volkswagen Passat.

Rear seat backrests can be unlocked and folded electrically at the push of a button to create an enlarged, level, more versatile and easier to use load compartment. Optional is a powered tailgate and hands free access system that allows it to be opened and closed by a simple foot motion without touching.

Official word?
Commenting, Mercedes-Benz Ireland sales manager Ciaran Allen said "despite the fact that estate car sales are never as high here as in other countries, with its attractive new looks, higher specifications and more generous interior space, we expect the new C-Class Estate to capitalise on the popularity of the C-Class Saloon and lift our sales figures in this segment."
