Is the Nissan e-Power system a real hybrid?

Is the Nissan Qashqai e-power a real hybrid compared with other makes such as Toyota hybrid cars?

Our answer:

Hi Paul,

There are many different types of hybrid systems in cars. The Nissan e-Power system is very different to that found in most Toyotas, but it is still a hybrid system for sure. In a Toyota-like system, the wheels are driven by either an electric motor or the engine or a combination of both. In the e-Power system, the wheels are always driven by an electric motor only. The engine under the bonnet in the e-Power cars acts solely to generate electricity used to charge its battery and power the electric motor. There is no physical connection between the engine and the wheels, but it is still a hybrid.
