How much to import a Discovery Sport?

I have just bought a 2018 landrover discovery sport in Northern Ireland for 20000 sterling. How much will it cost to register it in R0I vrt etc Thanks James.

Our answer:

Hi James,

I'll have to make a few assumptions here, as you've not given us all the information. First up I'll assume you live south of the border. Secondly, I'm going to assume that the car is powered by the 2.0-litre diesel engine with CO2 emissions of 136-140g/km putting it into Band 14 for VRT at a rate of 20 per cent.

The VRT is then calculated on the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), which is the value Revenue believes the car is worth on the Irish market. That has no direct relationship to the amount you actually paid for the car. I'd assume an OMSP in the region of €30,000 - higher if it's a particularly high-spec car you've bought. An OMSP of €30,000 would mean a VRT bill of €6,000 alone. The NOx levy is likely to be €270.

It is also possible that you may have to pay VAT at 23 per cent and import duty of 10 per cent, but that will depend on whether the car was registered new in Northern Ireland or if it was imported as a used car to there, when that happened. Come back to us with further details if you'd like some of those details clarified.
