Thinking of buying an Octavia estate.

Thinking of buying an Octavia estate.

Hello, I'm thinking of buying a skoda Octavia estate (mark 3, late 2013 reg) but can't decide on the engine type. 1.4 petrol or 1.6 or 2.0 lt diesel. I do 15000 miles a year on average, 60% dual carriageway, the rest urban. My mechanic says the petrol 1.4 petrol is too weak for the size of car and that the 1.6 diesel is better but still too small (needs a sister gear) and recommends the 2 lt instead. I'm not into performance, or speed etc just looking for a solid , reliable and economical car. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

Our answer:

Hi Barry,

The 1.6 TDI diesel should be about the right fit, assuming you do mean miles and not kilometres when you say 15,000. The petrol 1.4 is a little on the small side for the Octavia, especially if you are doing largely motorway and dual carriageway work, but it would be worth considering the 1.2 TSI petrol — forget the engine size, in this case, as the turbo means it has more than enough power and it's almost as economical as the diesel.
